As I write this, I am sitting in a small, white-walled office. I can hear men outside my door talking about Deals and Contracts and Money. I am shirking my responsibilities as a small business owner for a short minute to write a little for this newsletter.

My name is Ruby. I’m a 28-year-old victim-survivor of child abuse and a former Sydney Anglican evangelical. It has taken me years to unravel the subjugating power dynamics present in both of these experiences, and much of that unravelling continues today. Please tread carefully.

I live on the lands of the Bidjigal people of the Eora Nation, just south of Sydney on the beautiful Guragurang (Georges River). I spend a lot of my time on Country, with sand and sea between my toes. It is here that I take my books and my bicycle and my hiking boots. I recognise the immense privilege in doing so and express my gratitude.

This blog attempts to unravel learned ideas inherited from a patriarchal world and a patriarchal faith. As I age and navigate relationships, both romantic and platonic, as I confront my own privilege in whiteness and health, I come to the page with an earnest desire to make sense of things.

Thank you for being here.
